Liyi felt a faint sense of loss as he watched the young figures walking side by side and gradually disappearing into the distance. He couldn't help but laugh at himself, realizing that a few days of hardship had softened his heart, making him overly sentimental.
He instructed the driver to turn back and reached for his phone when his hand encountered something hard in the seat gap. Looking down, he saw it was the bank card he had given Ni Xuanyi.
Picking up the bank card, Liyi couldn't help but feel a bit sentimental; this little girl's temperament was even more stubborn than what he had observed.
No matter how intelligent or capable Liyi was, he could never fully comprehend the feeling of loneliness and hopelessness that Ni Xuanyi experienced. His parents were alive and well, his family harmonious, his siblings lively, and his home warm and cozy—there was no way for him to truly understand the sorrow and despair in little Ni Xuanyi's heart.
With this special incident, Liyi returned to his hectic work schedule. Only on rare occasions would he suddenly recall that unforgettable day and night.
No matter how fierce or tender Meng Mang was, he couldn't stop Ni Xuanyi from moving forward.
Ni Xuanyi returned to town and, with the help of neighbors and friends, arranged her grandfather's funeral. She had planned to sell their house at a low price and then go to G City for university, but Meng Mang went crazy, fearing that Ni Xuanyi would leave and never return. He threatened anyone who wanted to buy the house, so Ni Xuanyi gave up on selling it. In the early light of dawn, she quietly left the small town.
Even in September, G City was still hot. The sun scorched fiercely from the sky. Ni Xuanyi came alone with just a travel bag to register at G University, while most other students were accompanied by their parents. Luxury cars lined up outside G University in long queues.
Ni Xuanyi's major is English, and she is a regular admissions student. Her tuition fees are not high, only more than three thousand yuan. Even though the money in her possession was sufficient, she still filled out an application for financial aid.
Ni Xuanyi has always been very independent since childhood. She completed everything from registration and payment to collecting new bedding and dormitory keys by herself. Compared to those students who were accompanied everywhere, she appeared lonely but had long grown accustomed to this situation.
With her luggage in hand, Ni Xuanyi went upstairs to find her assigned dorm room. Upon entering the room, there were already two girls inside sorting out their belongings. When they noticed her enter, one of them looked back briefly without saying anything and continued with what she was doing while the other greeted her cheerfully: "Hi, nice to meet you, I'm Ji Yan." She then handed a cup of water to Ni Xuanyi.
"Thank you," said Ni Xuanyi who was both thirsty and tired. She took the water and gulped it down before handing back the empty cup with a smile and introducing herself.
Their dormitory is one of the most popular standard rooms, housing four people in two double-decker beds per room. The upper bed serves as sleeping quarters while the lower level has space for desks and wardrobes, complete with an air conditioner, water dispenser, and a private bathroom.
The earlier arrivals had chosen what they considered to be their ideal spots. One of them was using a brand-new laptop on her desk beside the window — obviously top-notch quality that clearly set her apart from others in terms of material possessions.
As both beds by the windows were occupied, Ni Xuanyi simply chose one near the door and climbed up to settle herself silently.
While they were sorting their belongings, two elegantly dressed middle-aged women burst into the dorm room. They greeted the laptop owner affectionately: "Dearie! Are you tired Let Mom help you!"
"Oh no need, I’ll be done in a moment," replied the girl dismissively as she gently pushed her mother away.
Another woman smiled and said, "Miss Guoguo, today is your first day of school. Auntie will treat you to lunch. Whatever you want to eat, just let me know."
The girl called Li Guoguo was still rather polite to her auntie. She frowned slightly as she thought for a moment and said, "Auntie, I saw a French restaurant across from the school when I arrived earlier. Let's go there to try it out. If the food is good enough, I'll eat there in the future."
"Sure! Now that Guoguo has started university, she’s practically an adult already. Today we’ll order a bottle of 1982 vintage red wine and celebrate properly!"
The three of them continued chatting and laughing as they walked around proudly before finally leaving.
"Oh my, they’ve finally left. They were so noisy that I couldn’t take it anymore," Ji Yan sat down on a chair and sighed deeply.
Ni Xuanyi smiled at her.
"Ni Xuanyi, have you finished packing up Why don’t we go out to explore the school together We can also check out the cafeteria. While they’re having French cuisine, how about we enjoy some rice noodle soup"
The mention of rice noodle soup made Ni Xuanyi feel a sense of familiarity and she nodded in agreement with Ji Yan’s suggestion.
Walking around the campus together, they could see flowers blooming everywhere. Couples were often seen walking hand-in-hand, some students playing sports while others read books as they walked...
Ni Xuanyi looked at these things and thought about the oppressive, cruel, and perilous Golden Triangle region, as well as her deceased grandfather... This place indeed was a world apart from there.
In the evening, the two girls went to the cafeteria to experience the atmosphere of a university campus. After ordering different boxed meals for themselves, they returned to their dormitory. Li Gegge still hadn't come back; after eating, they lay on the bed and chatted before falling asleep.
From this day onward, Ni Xuanyi and cheerful Ji Yan became good friends. Their dormitory was temporarily occupied by just the three of them, with another bed remaining empty.
Li Gegge arrogantly went about her own business, looking disdainful towards the rest of them as if she didn't want to associate with them at all.
After new students enrolled, they were supposed to undergo military training first. However, due to the school's celebration for its centennial anniversary, Ni Xuanyi and the others' military training was postponed.
G University is a prestigious institution that has been around for a hundred years, so naturally, the scale of this centennial celebration would be grand. It was said that many distinguished figures who once studied at G University and are now prominent in society would be invited to attend.
During summer vacation, the school organized students to rehearse performances for the celebration. As new students had just enrolled, their teachers asked them to prepare some programs and select those of high quality to participate in the performance on the occasion.
Everyone knew that many famous people would come during the celebration. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase themselves, so lots of people actively prepared for it, hoping to stand out in this performance and catch the attention of some promising young talent.
Ni Xuanyi and Ji Yan agreed on this matter: since they had no special talents to display, they decided to quietly remain as spectators.before everyone else, waiting there. Shortly after, a middle-aged man with slightly receding hair walked in, surrounded by attendants, likely being the head honcho from the other side. The man, acting...
